About Caleb Reed
Caleb Reed writes about identity, power, and the quiet negotiations people make to belong.
This Substack is anchored by Line & Verse, a serialized coming-of-age novel set at a conservative Southern college in the late 1990s. It follows Ethan Harris through fraternity life, friendship, and the slow, disorienting realization that who he is doesn’t quite fit the world he’s been taught to navigate.
Alongside the novel are essays on queer literature, film, and culture, as well as occasional personal reflections drawn from two decades working inside American healthcare leadership. The through line is the same: how systems shape people, and what it costs to step outside them.
Some pieces lean literary. Some lean personal. All of them are grounded in lived experience.

About Line & Verse
Line & Verse is set in a world of fraternity houses, tailgates, and tightly enforced ideas about masculinity.
Ethan Harris arrives at Westmore College expecting to find his place. Instead, he finds himself learning how to perform belonging before he understands what it actually means.
As pledging intensifies and relationships deepen, the lines between friendship, loyalty, and desire begin to blur.
It’s a story about becoming—before you have the language for who you are
