Great analysis of Deep House and great job connecting it to your own memories and experiences. I enjoyed JAL's latest (but actually enjoyed Gay Bar even more), and I agree the memoir-plus genre (mixing in history/some reporting/other contextual details beyond one's own experiences), is a great development for the genre. Plus, I'm happy we're getting more Gen-X stories!
BTW, have you read Dale Peck's 'Visions and Revisions: Coming of Age in the Age of AIDS'? It also offers essential insights that often get overlooked.
For some reason, I didn't finish Gay Bar, it didn't resonate the same for me as Deep House. After reading DH though, I devoured Gay Bar, if only to get more details about Famous Blue Raincoat, and their time together.
