"We’re all unliked until we prove otherwise.” Nice! Enjoying your story so far. I like the detail and distance with which Ethan sees things. Really captures the way one feels when something is new and not yet understood.
One complaint. This is trite. But...all the smoking! In the late 1990's? Seems sus. And what does it say about me that people ruining themselves with smoking is kind of a deal breaker, for friendship, romance and reading further? Ugh! I hope I'm the only one with this narrow pov.
So, the story is set in Virginia, which was the home of Phillip Morris and the last state in the US to ban smoking in public places. Everyone really did smoke…. But, I also have a bit of a fetish, I think it’s 🥵. To each his own😂. That said, it’s not mentioned as much going forward.
That makes sense - my ignorance of those days and times. And I def used to find at least an unlit cigarette sexy. But the wrinkles and the cancer, not so much. But as you say, to each his own. I just needed to understand the why. Now I can get on with your good story!
I could easily picture the scene from your descriptions. The college I attended was close enough to home that I saved money by not living in the dorms, but I wish now that I'd had that experience.
